Starting driving lessons can be confusing.

What is the role of a sponsor?

Your sponsor is someone who helps you practise outside your professional EDT driving lessons.

They do not replace your driving instructor.

Can I book my driving test while doing EDT?

You can apply for the driving test while you are still completing EDT.

However, you cannot be scheduled for the test until the relevant requirements have been met.

For a standard learner, this includes completing the 12 EDT sessions and meeting the applicable learner-permit requirements.

This is worth knowing because some learners assume that applying for a test means they are automatically ready to take it.

It does not.

Your training and eligibility still have to be completed.

What if I qualify for reduced EDT?

Some learners with a full foreign driving licence may qualify for reduced EDT.

The reduced programme involves six specified sessions rather than the full 12. The RSA also explains that approved reduced-EDT applicants may receive an exemption from the six-month rule.

Do not assume that you qualify simply because you previously held a licence abroad.

You need approval for reduced EDT.

Should EDT lessons be manual or automatic?

You can complete driver training in an automatic vehicle.

This can be a good option for learners who prefer automatic driving or find clutch and gear control difficult.

That makes the manual-versus-automatic decision worth considering before you get too far into your training.

What happens after EDT?

Completing your Essential Driver Training lessons is an important milestone, but it does not mean you should immediately book the first available test and expect to pass.

You need practice.

You also need to develop the ability to drive independently without constant prompts from your instructor.

That is where additional driving lessons and pre-test lessons become useful.

A pre-test lesson is different from an early EDT lesson.

By that stage, you should already have the basic driving skills. The focus moves towards test standards, common mistakes, road positioning, observation, manoeuvres and the areas where you need more consistency.

The RSA advises learners to choose an approved driving instructor for EDT and notes that instructors set their own fees.

When comparing EDT driving lessons, look beyond the price.

Ask:

Is the instructor RSA approved?
Do they provide the full EDT programme?
Can they explain what each session covers?
How do they track progress?
Can they provide additional lessons after EDT?
Do they offer automatic lessons if required?
Do they provide pre-test preparation?

You are not just paying for time in a car.

You are paying for instruction, feedback and experience.
